7 Easy and Inexpensive Last Minute Halloween Costume Ideas

Halloween is just around the corner and you know what that means… But even if you have waited to the last minute, there is still time to figure out what you are going to wear. By this point, there probably aren't many choices left in stores. To avoid the expense and lack of originality of store bought costumes, you should think about making your costume yourself. Homemade costumes are more fun and cost-effective than pre-made costumes. Plus, including creating a homemade costume in your Halloween prep can be part of the holiday fun!

Here are some inexpensive, homemade Halloween costume ideas that will cost little money and show lots of imagination. Remember, any materials that you don't already own can be easily obtained from local thrift stores and resale shops.

1. Scarecrow
Scare up some Halloween fun with this simple but frightening classic.
Materials needed: An oversized flannel shirt, some straw, and faded jeans with patches will make a great scarecrow.
Directions: Stuff the jeans and shirt with plastic grocery bags and leave a little straw hanging out of the shirt and jeans. Complete your scarecrow costume, with a little makeup and an old hat.

2. Ghost
Ghosts are an old stand-by and never go out of style.
Materials needed: Use an old white sheet with holes cut for the eyes and sew a simple treat bag out of a scrap of material or a worn out pillow case. You may want to create a colorful ghost by using a sheet covered with polka dots or one that is brightly colored.
Directions: You can dress your ghost up a bit by making lips out of red lipstick and a few false eyelashes. Or you could color a beard and mustache with markers.

3. Clown
If you lean more toward silly than scary, think about a homemade clown.
Materials needed: You can create a great clown with sweat clothes that are a bit too large decorated with fabric paint or markers.
Directions: Simply sew on some pom poms and grab an inexpensive wig or a large, colorful gardening hat to complete your outfit.

4. Hippy
Return to the 1960s as a hippy.
Materials needed: A tie-dye shirt and faded jeans with holes in the knees.
Directions: Add a jacket or vest covered in fringe and top off with a headband and ponytail wig for the most authentic looking hippy costume of all time.

5. Nerd
Time for the nerds to get their revenge!
Materials needed: You can dress as a typical nerd simply with a white shirt, some pocket protectors, a pair of pants that are too short, some old horn-rimmed glasses, a pair white socks, and a pair plain black dress shoes or oxfords.
Directions: Don't forget to tape one corner of the glasses for a true nerd appearance. Make sure you use plenty of hair gel to slick back your hair and a few overly large fake teeth will be a great addition. You could even add some bright red suspenders for the complete geek look.

6. Soda Can
A simple barrel can transform you into your favorite brand of soda!
Materials needed: An inexpensive plastic barrel.
Directions: Cut a hole in the bottom for your head and holes opposite one another for your arms. Then paint the entire barrel the colors and design of your favorite soda. Be sure to take proper safety precautions when using cutting tools and paint.

7. Halloween T-Shirt
