How to Pick the Perfect Teacher Appreciation Gift

Gift Ideas for Your Child's Teacher Author: Adam Anderson

Everyone knows the best way to a teacher's heart is to through a gift, either on the first or last days of school or around the holidays. Elementary school teachers especially love to receive presents from students as a token of thanks for their hard work. Students like to give presents because they think it is an automatic way to land the title of Teacher's Pet. If you want your child's gift to stand out from the crowd of apples piled on his or her teacher's desk, here are a few creative suggestions:
  • Lanyards and badge holders. If you know that the teacher is required to wear an ID throughout the day, have your child choose which kinds of lanyards to give to the teacher. Lanyards come in all different colors, patterns, and are made with a lot of different material such as beads. Lanyards and badge holders are thoughtful, practical, and most likely not the typical gift teachers receive from their students.
  • A donation in the teacher's name. Make your child feel special by making a difference. Let him or her choose the charity. Then, have your child raise money throughout the summer or school year, and put the donation in his or her teacher's name. Have your child handwrite a letter to the teacher explaining how the money was raised, and why the specific charity was chosen. This will allow your child to learn the importance of making a positive impact on society, and it will truly be appreciated by any teacher!
  • A mall gift card. Anytime we are in front of the same people on a daily basis, the last thing we want to do is wear the same clothes over and over. Teachers probably do not want to wear the same outfits every week. It would be a nice gesture for your child to give a mall gift card so the teacher could choose which store to shop. Besides, who wouldn't enjoy shopping with someone else's money?
  • Personalized sticky notes. Teachers often have to send students home with notes on their tests or homework. A creative idea would be to order personalized sticky notes printed with the teacher's name. If your child gives the sticky notes to the teacher in the beginning of the year, it would be exciting for him or her to see the teacher using this very practical gift.
When it comes to receiving presents from their students, most teachers are worn out with getting apple-themed presents. Also, not all of them drink coffee or tea, and although they may appreciate receiving a mug, it may be of no use to them. The above gift ideas are unique and considerate. Teachers do not need to be pummeled with cute knick-knacks year in and year out, especially if they have been teaching for quite a while. You can imagine how many gifts teachers accumulate through the years! Whatever your child chooses to give to the teacher, suggest to him or her that the gift should be something the teacher does not already have, that it is something the teacher could use, and will always cherish.
