The Saturday between Black Friday and Cyber Monday has been designated as Small Business Saturday® in an effort to encourage consumers to buy holiday gifts from small businesses rather than corporate retail chains.
But as you browse your local Main Street USA stores, don’t forget about independent retailers that may be so small that they only have an online presence.
These are photography, crafting, design, and other businesses run by friends, neighbors, or maybe family members from home, sometimes as a second or even third job.
Some of these artists make their merchandise by hand themselves, while others use third parties for fulfillment (production, shipping, and handling most customer service concerns). But no matter their business model, this is a great way for you to get direct access to a designer and interact with him or her one on one. How many big box retailers offer a personal connection with an artist from the comfort of your own home? And some may even offer custom design services at little or no extra charge.
Plus, you can get custom items in very small quantities, even if you only need one for a very special occasion!

Together, we can make a big impact on small businesses in our community, both local and online. Remember, if you can't shop local, at least shop small!
